SPCX: Borrow Demand Is the Message. Lendable Supply Is the Context. We Have Both

Securities lending activity in SpaceX (SPCX US) intensified significantly over the past week, with utilization of lending inventory climbing from 84.1% to just under 90% in five trading sessions. Securities lending inventory represented 52% of the public float while the borrow quantity exceeded 296 million shares. The elevated utilization raised the cost to borrow which surged from 184 bps to 496 bps reflecting how quickly the market can reprice when inventory thins. By mid-day July 30th, intraday flow showed 28 shares rerated to every new share borrowed, with over 85 million shares repriced across 311 loans.

While inventory reprieve is already marked for August 6th with approximately 911.5 million restricted shares unlocked, the central question is not whether those shares eventually enter circulation, but how quickly the new inventory is made available to brokers. The weeks following the IPO illustrated the securities lending market’s sensitivity to shifting supply dynamics, as inventory fluctuations fed directly through to borrow rates. However, the days prior to August 6 will introduce a new layer of elevated carry costs that may persist well beyond the lockup expiration date as lenders seek to maximize returns on constrained inventory. Short sellers in Musk-affiliated names have navigated similar dynamics before, and August 4’s earnings call introduces an event risk that could prove decisive for the direction of borrow demand.
