Short Investors Tailor a Supply Squeeze at Hugo Boss

Equilend data shows Hugo Boss' supply shrinking to record tightness as short interest builds on takeover anticipation.

Equilend Utilization in Hugo Boss (BOSS GR) has climbed significantly this year, from 34% in January to 90% now, a level that has held since mid-August and leaves short sellers with limited liquidity, with just 400,000 of the roughly 4 million lendable shares remaining. Equilend Cost to Borrow has moved in step with that supply squeeze, surging from GC rates in January to about 570 bps, remaining volatile throughout that build.

While the share price has remained stable so far this year, short interest has been building as Frasers Group, controlled by Mike Ashley, who is no stranger to combative stake building, pushes its holding toward 48% after Hugo Boss rejected its hostile takeover bid. The standoff has already cost Hugo Boss its buyback and its chairman, Stephan Sturm, who is stepping down as Frasers reshapes the board, a change that coincides with weak H1 results that marked revenue down 8% and EBIT down 34%. Equilend data began indicating these underlying fundamentals months ago, well before this news broke.
