Allen Buys the Buzz: Shorts Scramble as $120M Deal Flips BuzzFeed's Borrow Story

EquiLend Utilization rises to a six-month high as Byron Allen's majority-stake acquisition triggers aggressive short positioning in BZFD.

EquiLend data shows borrow conditions tightening sharply in BuzzFeed (BZFD), following the disclosure that Allen Family Digital will acquire a 52% controlling stake in the company for $120 million, valuing BuzzFeed at $3 per share.

Since the announcement, EquiLend Utilization has climbed to a six-month high. EquiLend Cost to Borrow rose rapidly from near general collateral levels in the days before the announcement to more than 3,000 bps by May 13. With shares on loan following a similar trend, EquiLend Predicted Short Interest, a machine learning-derived view of current short exposure, rose 58% to 2.17 million shares, reflecting a rapid build in short positioning.

The sharp move higher appears to have created a split dynamic in the market: earlier short positions may be feeling squeeze pressure as the stock reprices higher, while new short sellers are entering at elevated valuations, betting the rally has outpaced the company’s fundamentals. The deal structure has added to that view, with only $20 million paid upfront, and the remainder structured as a five-year note tied to newly issued shares. Combined with Q1 2026 results showing declining revenue and widening losses, the gap between the takeover narrative and underlying fundamentals has kept short sellers engaged.

With BuzzFeed under intense investor scrutiny ahead of the deal close, subscribe to EquiLend’s real-time data to track every shift in short interest and see how the market is navigating the story.
