Shorts Slice Back as Wafer Works Heats Up
EquiLend data shows borrow demand surging back into Wafer Works as short sellers re-engage a stock that has more than quadrupled.
EquiLend Borrow Quantity in Wafer Works (6182 TT) fell from 31.9 million shares in late January to a six-month low of 9.3 million by June 24, then reversed sharply, climbing 165% in just 11 trading days to 24.6 million shares as of July 9. In parallel, EquiLend Cost to Borrow remains above 400 bps despite declining from peaks of more than 1,000 bps in March and April, while an EquiLend Short Squeeze Score of 64 signals building pressure as shorts move back in against a rising stock.
Silicon wafer prices are rising across Taiwan for the first time in two years, driven by surging AI data center demand and a broader recovery in automotive and industrial chip production. Wafer Works completed price hikes on its smaller 6-inch wafers earlier this year and is pushing for further increases on 8- and 12-inch lines, sending the stock up more than 420%, from under $1 in early April to $5.36 on July 9. EquiLend data shows short sellers re-entering as the rally stretches valuations, with borrow quantity climbing dramatically – a signal that positioning is turning against the move.
