What advice would you give a woman that would like to explore a future career in the financial services industry?

Expand your network. We often assume working in the financial services industry to simply mean “trading” or “managing people’s money,” when in reality there are hundreds of different types of jobs and financial divisions that you can pursue a career in. Find a mentor and meet a range of like-minded individuals to help provide insight and potentially lead to good opportunities. I’m fortunate enough to have met women in the industry that are role models to me and have helped me to navigate my career so far.

Why do you think it’s important to have more women involved in the FinTech industry?

Diversity in the workplace can bring new ideas and perspectives, helping to drive innovation. Visibility of women in leadership in the industry inspires me, and it’s important that all demographics are given the opportunities and confidence to be entering these industries that have lacked this diversity.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion. What key steps do you think we need to take to encourage the industry to help forge an inclusive world?

Increase education and awareness of the gaps we have. We can’t and shouldn’t only have awareness of the challenges faced by our own demographic, because that would mean that change would never happen! We need to educate ourselves on the barriers to opportunities in the industry faced by others so that we can become allies and help drive change. I hope that International Women’s Day brings this awareness to the obstacles women continue to face in the industry.

What advice would you give a woman that would like to explore a future career in the financial services industry?

If the interest is there, go for it! My advice to anyone is to be inquisitive, coachable and to invest in relationships. It’s a challenge to be a woman in an industry where women are underrepresented. It’s also a major opportunity. Know your value and communicate it.

Why do you think it’s important to have more women involved in the FinTech industry?

Women’s involvement in FinTech increases the industry’s access to diversity of thought and experience; this ultimately enables more innovation on a firm level and industry wide. It’s also important for women to see themselves represented in FinTech so more are encouraged to pursue a similar path.

Who are the women that inspire you most and why?

My mother is selfless, independent and always appreciating everyday moments of awe. My grandmother was a rarity who retired at 81 and lived to 98. Both are women outstanding in their devotion to family and as individuals. Both have shaped my greatest values.

What advice would you give a woman that would like to explore a future career in the financial services industry?

We have had many women inspiring us as role models, their achievements breaking the many barriers that women face. If the financial services industry sparks your interest, my advice would be to build your knowledge by reading more, attending networking events and connecting with people in the industry to gain further insight and understand the opportunities available to start your journey!

Why do you think it’s important to have more women involved in the FinTech industry?

In the last few decades, we have seen women flipping the narrative that empathy and warmth indicate weakness. The FinTech industry is dynamic and fast-paced; hence, having diverse perspectives can increase innovation and lead to smarter decision-making, eventually adding value to the bottom line.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2024 is Inspire Inclusion. What key steps do you think we need to take to encourage the industry to help forge an inclusive world?

I think that #InspiringInclusion is a continuous journey to create an environment of equality and empowerment where female employees cannot just thrive but also feel supported. Offering flexible working arrangements, having inclusive policies and a performance culture can reduce the impact of the persistent “motherhood penalty” and encourage more women to take up leadership roles.
